In the world of translation, the use of software tools is on the increase. Also at GATIM, this technology is utilized as an extra aid and supplement to human translations, whereby, the latter always remains the decisive and determinant factor during each of our processes whether revision, correction or the final approval of a translation.
Our utilization of technology includes the following:
1. Translation Tools: 2. What translation tools are there?
Translation Tools are software tools specifically aimed at improving the efficiency and effectivity of a translator’s work in most cases.
The two main technologies for the (automated) translation of digital documents are MT (Machine Translation) and CAT (Computer-Aided Translation).
The following are examples of commonly used translation tools:
- Digital dictionaries (MT)
- On-line dictionaries
- Terminology management programs
- Translation Memory Tools (CAT Tools)
- Machine Translation Systems
- Speech Recognition Software
3. MT (Machine Translation): 4. CAT-Tools (Translation Memories):
MT-applications (Machine Translation Programs) are able to translate entire documents at once and may sometimes produce results that are generally sufficient to understand a simple message. This is especially the case with translations of French and German texts into English and vice versa. Such translations, however, are far below level when the target language is Arabic or Dutch language or the text structure is difficult or of literary nature, for example.
Many applications that produce machine translations are offered for free on the Internet by, Yahoo! Google, Babel Fish, Systran Translation and Free Translation, for example. Examples of paid programs are Babylon, Systran and Power Translator.
The most widely used software programs by professional translation agencies are usually referred to by the English term CAT Tools, or "Computer Aided Translation".
Contrary to MT (Machine Translation) and as the word "aided" suggests, CAT-Tools only play and assisting role in the process of translation. They mainly enhance the efficiency of a translator and accelerate the process of translation and text processing by storing translated phrases in a so-called "translation memory", or as it’s called in industry jargon: a "Translation Memory". In such a Translation Memory, the translated text is stored in smaller parts called: "Translation Units".
